I Wish That Time Would Do the Same

Molly is currently learning to crawl. Let me rephrase that sentence. She is teaching herself to crawl, and like her parents, she is a bit of a perfectionist. She practices day and night, even in her sleep. Really. I actually had to go in and comfort her last night after she knocked her head against the side of the crib numerous times. Her eyes remained closed throughout the whole ordeal.

So far, she manages to get up on her knuckles and knees. Then, on her hands and toes, in a most impressive pushup. There are a few different possibilities after this point.

Sometimes, she kicks her heels up into the air and tries to propel herself forward. Usually, she just lands on her face.

Other times she lifts a leg and arm high into the sky and pauses for a minute or two. Perhaps contemplating her next move or just stretching.

Most often she just scoots a little backwards. After a few minutes, she gets bored and either rolls or just turns her body around and rocks back and forth in a new direction.

I still try to applaud her efforts where appropriate, and place objects and myself in front of her to encourage her progress. I can’t imagine it will be too much longer — better start the babyproofing this weekend!

Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark

So when I was a wee lad there was a commercial on teevee from Beck’s promoting their dark beers. The commercial featured Martin Mull and attempted to dispel the myth that “dark beer is only for people named Gunter with thick necks.” The tag line for the campaign was “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark.”

Last night, I learned that The Dark is perhaps a little frightening after all.

Anna and I watched the new Battlestar Gallactica pilot. All I can say is “that was dark.” Really dark. Particularly the part where the new President has to decide whether to take all the FTL-capable ships and escape the Cylons while leaving the non-FTL-capable ships behind. Tough decision. Tougher still to learn that the cute child she had just been talking with last scene was on one of the non-FTL-capable ships.

On the one hand, I think it speaks well of the writers and producers if they’re willing to air such a dark and gloomy series.

I think I’m going to love it.

Six Months Old- Halfway There!

Here were Molly’s stats for her “unbirthday”:

Apparel Humor

Weight: 16lbs even
Length: 26.5 inches
Noggin: Average

Molly has been eating “solid” foods since last month. To date, she has sampled: rice cereal and oatmeal; bananas, pears, and apples; sweet potatoes and squash.

With the exception of rice cereal, she seems to enjoy her food a great deal, and her little mouth and hands eagerly reach for our food as well. In fact, she often cries when she has been denied big people food. She fails to realize that the mush is a necessary evil- otherwise, her poor little tummy (and intestines) might explode!

Bare-Butt Bird

Wait, they do anyway.

Okay, so, they might explode even more dramatically, but I doubt the smell would be much worse!

Molly dislikes sitting up, although she can do it. Instead, she would rather roll and wiggle around on her belly. She kind of crawls at this point, often backwards.

Another Funny Face

She loves for us to pull her up to her feet, where she can do backbends, and her version of walking.

My favorite part of the past month or so has been watching Molly develop her own personality. I love to compare and contrast her quirks with those of her little friends. She is very different, much more reserved and shy than they are. She takes her time to observe and analyze someone before she lets them get close. And woe to anyone within earshot when a stranger touches her before she has completed her analysis!

Pirate Ahoy!

Molly can be very serious, but when she laughs, it is light and musical. It is a small brook dancing over smooth pebbles. She gives her own version of hugs and kisses, which are playful grabs to our faces and hair, plus a pair of slobbery lips attached to our cheeks. I can’t get enough.

She is so beautiful (everyone says so)! Auburn hair (what there is of it), dark eyes, pink apple cheeks, just enough chub.

My Own Gerber Baby

She has been working on her first teeth for the past couple of months (or so it has seemed), but it looks as though it may be a while. It is adorable to see all of her little friends with the tiny little “pearls” in their mouths.

Our goal for this month is to get her to sleep a little more soundly at night. She still gets up between 1 and 5 times an evening, although lately it has been between 2 and 3 times average. It seems that she takes after me in this regard. Poor girl. I hope that we can gently teach her that it is pleasant and desirable to sleep through the night- for all of us. At least I would like her to only get up once!

The real fun has begun!

Our Photos

These days all our photos are stored on Flickr. Pretty much just like everyone else. Our old photos are also still available.
